More jobs set to go at Trinity Mirror’s Welsh titles

Regional publisher Trinity Mirror has today announced an additional 14 job losses at its Cardiff-based Media Wales subsidiary.

Two photographers, three production journalists and nine advertising staff are affected by the proposed cutbacks.

The move follows the axeing of 22 editorial posts at Media Wales in July this year.

On that occasion, ten district office staff, eight production journalists and four sports staff were made redundant.

Trinity Mirror issued two separate statements today announcing the latest cutbacks.

The first said:  “As a result of an ongoing review of the business Media Wales has announced a number of proposed changes to its editorial structure.

“These changes are expected to result in a reduction in staff numbers of two photographers and three production staff members.”

A second announcement covered proposed changes to the advertising department, resulting in a reduction in advertising staff numbers of “approximately nine.”

Martin Shipton, the National Union of Journalists’ father-of-chapel at Media Wales told BBC Wales that the cuts were “a very serious blow.”

He said the pool of photographers at Media Wales would be cut from six to four.

“This is a very serious blow and members of the NUJ are extremely unhappy that these further redundancy announcements have been made so shortly after the other one,” he said.

“We are going to be in intensive discussions with the company about the implications of the redundancies. It would be very difficult to continue to provide the same level of photographic service as now.”

The Media Wales division includes daily titles The Western Mail and the South Wales Echo together with Wales on Sunday and the Celtic weekly titles.

Last week Trinity Mirror flatly denied NUJ claims that it plans to turn The Western Mail into a weekly.

Are those at the head of the NUJ actually going to try and do anything about the awful situation for its membership at Media Wales or will they just leave it to the Welsh Assembly and hope they come up with something?

Four photographers for two daily papers, a Sunday and a whole host of weeklies…which is, presumably, why they regularly use strange images to illustrate stories instead of pictures of people which sell papers and thus help keep us all in jobs.
