Weekly’s campaign will see litter louts pay out

Images of people dropping litter will be published in a weekly Lincolnshire newspaper as part of a campaign that could land those idendtified with a hefty fine.

Johnston Press title the Boston Standard has joined forces with Boston Borough Council to launch the campaign which will use CCTV images to catch those responsible for making a mess of Boston’s streets.

This is the third time the paper has launched the campaign and they were the first newspaper to pioneer the scheme seven years ago in 2004 when it proved to be a success.

This year’s campaign was launched in last week’s edition of the paper and pictures of people captured on CCTV by the council will follow later on in the month.

Editor Stephen Stray said: “We have done it a couple of times before and it has always proved successful. It followed concerns raised about litter in the town and dog fouling.

“The public are asked to identify the people in the pictures with their names and details, they are then issued with a £75 by the council. It’s more of a deterrent. ”

The last time the campaign was carried in the paper around 12 people were caught on camera littering the streets. When people realised they couldn’t get away with it the number swiftly dropped until the council struggled to find any offenders.

Added Stephen: “In the past the public have really got behind the campaign. One week we had all 12 people identified.

“We want to get the message out there. It’s one of the many things people are trying to eradicate in Boston.”
