Harlow is Britain’s oldest Journalism training centre and for 50 years we have been pioneering courses accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists, the industry’s leading training body.

Just last year the NCTJ named our Fast Track Magazine course the best in the country; during the previous academic year our One-year News Course received the same accolade.

The NCTJ Diploma is the gold standard for anyone wanting a worthwhile career in newspapers or magazines. The courses are fully accredited by the Periodicals Training Council, the magazine industry body.

Entry criteria
Ideally, you will be a graduate with some experience of writing for a newspaper, magazine or web site. All candidates will be interviewed and sit a national entrance exam.

How study works
You’ll study multi-platform journalism, including news reporting, newspaper law, central and local government and Teeline shorthand (to 100 words per minute). And you will have options such as video journalism, sports writing subbing and page design, or Business of Magazines. Assessment will be by formal NCTJ exams and a portfolio of news or magazine reports, both written and multi-media.

This is a practical course and students will be expected to be carrying out work experience alongside their studies as far as possible, sourcing, researching and writing stories every week.

Facilities
Harlow College has a full equipped newsroom complete with Macs and PCs, as well as industry standard video cameras and broadcast equipment.

BA Journalism
UCAS course code P500, Campus Code 0

Entry criteria
180 UCAS points, with a minimum of grade C English GCSE or equivalent. Consideration will also be given to those with relevant industry experience.

About the course
This is a full-time three year course, validated by Anglia Ruskin University, that prepares students for a career in journalism.

This broad-based, single honours programme offers practical journalism training, including opportunities to explore a variety of contemporary mediums, with underpinning academic skills.

The programme is delivered wholly at The Journalism Centre, Harlow College campus and offers a combination of writing and practical skills such as shorthand, publishing production, video journalism, photojournalism and other specialisms. The underpinning knowledge is augmented by a work placement (internship) and research projects with journalistic outcomes which are appropriate to your career aspirations, skills and knowledge.

You will not only develop practical skills but also study and analyse the journalism industry within a social and economic context. If you choose to become a journalist you will have all the knowledge and skills you need. There are also career opportunities in associated areas such as PR, media research, media production, political lobbying, press agency work or a career as a press officer.

Students complete a total of six modules in each year. Assessment is mainly by portfolio, with a small number of examinations.

The course is accredited by the Periodicals Training Council and is currently awaiting accreditation by the National Council for the Training of Journalists.

Foundation Degree in Sports Journalism

Entry criteria
80 UCAS points from two A Levels, or equivalent, plus five GCSEs at grade C or above, including English.

About the course
This two-year course, accredited by Anglia Ruskin University, offers a combination of writing and practical skills such as news writing, sports reporting, sub-editing, page layout, shorthand, radio and online reporting and other areas.

The course is run wholly at The Journalism Centre, Harlow College and is a partly work-based course where students are fully supported through a variety of team and individual work. Modules also give you the opportunity to explore the history of the development of sports journalism, as well as the ethical and legal dimensions of the subject.

Students complete a total of six modules each year. Assessment is mainly by portfolio, with a small number of examinations.

Staff include an experienced sports writer and editor. There are regular guest speakers from across the industry and volunteer opportunities are available from a range of regional and national organisations and employers.

Regular trips are made to Parliament, the courts and local councils. Work placements are encouraged from the very beginning of the course and staff will offer advice and help out with contacts.
