‘Good news’ website to launch print edition

A magazine-style news website with a mission to restore “the lost art of storytelling” to local media is to launch a print edition after it received funding from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

One&Other will print a regular magazine which will act as an alternative to its digital news, culture and causes platform in York.

Site founder Stuart Golden, whose background is in publishing and marketing,  said the aim of One&Other is to ‘reinvent local media and to give a voice to good causes across the UK.’

The not-for-profit site has 60 people who contribute to it including professional journalists, illustrators, designers, photographers, videographers and hobbyists.

One&Other’s ambitious mission statement is set out on the site’s About Us page.

It states: “Our platforms will be the home of local news, culture, and conversations that inspire and empower communities for good.

“Out goes the negative news agenda and in comes more considered reporting, reviews, and experiences, combined with the long-lost art of storytelling and beautiful design.

“We feel the region is being increasingly starved of balanced coverage, so we’re making it our mission to re-inject the relevance, intelligence, charm, beauty and purpose back into local media.”

Said Stuart: “At One&Other, we have always believed that local media has the potential and responsibility to act as a catalyst for positive change in local communities, and this takes us one step closer to testing this theory.

“We want to publicly thank everybody at Joseph Rowntree Foundation for their enthusiasm and backing for the adventure we’re embarking on as we attempt to become part of the solution to the UK’s biggest social issues.”

The free magazine aims to build on the relationship with exisiting readers and improve accessibility to the local media for people who do not use the internet.

How the site looks

Nancy Kelley, Joseph Rowntree Foundation Deputy Director of research, said: “The Joseph Rowntree Foundation’s York Committee grants are aimed at supporting and strengthening the communities of York and reducing poverty and social exclusion.

“One&Other is a great example of an innovative project with the potential to make a real contribution to life in York, and we hope the grant will support the project to reach out to and work with people living in poverty in the city.”

Stuart added that One&Other intends to use the foundation’s backing to extend the support they are currently providing to local causes and community groups.

    Holy mother of jabbering god.

I’ve read some self-aggrandising tripe on here over the years, but this totally wears the crown, no question.

Get over yourself. The site might be brilliant – the big talk about it isn’t.

To say “We feel the region is being increasingly starved of balanced coverage, so we’re making it our mission to re-inject the relevance, intelligence, charm, beauty and purpose back into local media.” is not only narcissistic, it’s sticking the knife into other journalists in the region and slagging their professionalism.
