Fight to save subs’ jobs as 50 journalists go

Around 50 members of staff made redundant at two Scottish titles worked their last day at the newspapers on Friday.

Among those to finish at the Trinity Mirror owned Scottish Daily Record and Sunday Mail was photographer George Hunter who had worked there for 40 years.

National Union of Journalists’ Scottish organiser Paul Holleran said Friday was an emotional day but the union is still fighting to save up to three sub-editors jobs, which the union has secured a months’ temporary reprieve for.

Earlier this month Trinity Mirror confirmed that 85 jobs had been lost at the two flagship titles – 49 voluntary redundancies and 11 compulsory redundancies.

Mr Holleran said he had ‘lost track’ of the total number of people who had now left. At the start of the month HTFP reported that dozens of people had already worked their last day and the union were fighting to save ten jobs from compulsory redundancy.

He said: “The company came to us looking for 85 redundancies, we said that was far too many so they said they would defer a number of redundancies. Two to three guys will stay on for another month.”

The redundancies will still be made at the end of that month unless the company acknowledges that there is a need for the sub-editors who work across the two titles.

The union is claiming that the two titles now don’t have enough writers and one of the subs is a former reporter and should therefore be kept on.

Added Mr Holleran: “To be fair to the company they have extended meaningful negotiations.”

The company is not replacing five fixed-term contracts and the number of casual staff has also been reduced by 20 positions.

When the company announced the restructure in June the number of job losses was expected to be 93.

The changes will see design and subbing of some magazine based features will be outsourced to the Press Association, while non-Scottish news and features would be shared with London-based national sister titles.

Trinity Mirror had not commented at the time of publication.

Gawd, too many sloppy errors in this report. Giv us (or one of those facing redundancy) a job as a sub. This is something up with which I shall not put
