Ethics will be focus of journalism conference

Regulation and ethics will be discussed by a panel including regional newspaper editors at the annual Journalism Skills Conference next month.

The two-day event is being run by the National Council for the Training of Journalists on 30 November in Belfast and will include an after dinner speech by journalist Ray Snoddy OBE at Belfast City Hall.

The Newswatch presenter trained as a reporter with the Middlesex Advertiser and went on to work for The Times and Financial Times. He was awarded an OBE in 2000 for his services to journalism.

The conference will include a panel which will be chaired by Tom Thomson, managing editor of the Herald and Times Group.

Participants include Jim Flanagan, editor of the Ballymena Guardian, and Damian Wilson, group editor of Johnston Press Northern Ireland.

They will discuss ethical issues in the regional press, topics surrounding regulation and also cover how editors maintain high standards of journalism and operate within the law.

This discussion will take place at Belfast Metropolitan College during the afternoon of the first day of the conference after a visit to the Northern Ireland Assembly at Stormont for a question and answer session.

The second day will be held at the University of Ulster and feature industry workshops focusing on different specialist areas of journalism, plus a session on the media in Northern Ireland.

Each workshop will be hosted by experienced industry professionals including Robyn Bechelet, managing editor at Archant Life.
