Editors form greeting team ahead of Olympics

Six editors from weekly newspapers in Kent have signed up to a project to welcome visiting journalists from across the world for the 2012 London Games.

The editors from Northcliffe’s Kent Regional News and Media and Courier Media Group have formed a dedicated media team as part of the Global Greeter Network.

Those who have joined the Kent Greeters are Christine Rayner of the Medway News and East Kent Gazette, Simon Finlay of the Folkestone Herald and Express Series, Ian Read of the Kent and Sussex Courier, Rebecca Smith of the Isle of Thanet Gazette and Thanet Times, Roger Kasper of the Sevenoaks Chronicle, and John Nurden of the Whitstable, Herne Bay and Canterbury Times.

The team has been formed as part of Visit Kent’s preparations for the Olympic Games and is part of a network of volunteers in the county who are ready to meet visitors to the area to help them enjoy their time there.

  • Richard Karn, regional managing director for Northcliffe Media said: “We are delighted to be supporting this excellent initiative.

“Our editors are keen to meet and greet visiting journalists and, whenever possible, we will share our editorial facilities with them as they undertake their research or file copy.”

Fran Warrington, head of strategy and management at Visit Kent, said there were now Greeter networks all over the county after the first one was launched four years ago.

She said: “Our Media Greeter team is another example of Kent and Medway leading the way.

“Our newspaper editors know their areas inside out and are just the right people to assist journalists coming to Kent to find out more about our county and preparing for 2012 when we will be showcasing Kent and Medway to the world’s media during the London Games.”

I must have missed something – the Olympics are in East London. These editors and their newspapers are all somewhere else! So I guess the scene will be a group of editors standing outside a railway station in Kent waiting for foreign reporters to arrive…so they can tell them they’ve got off at the wrong station!
