Decision due on remaining Daily Record jobs

Seven journalists could find out today if their jobs at two major Scottish titles are safe.

Last month HTFP reported that 50 members of staff had worked their last day at Trinity Mirror titles the Daily Record and Sunday Mail.

The National Union of Journalists have been fighting to save the remaining seven jobs out of 85 and last month managed to negotiate with the company to keep the employees on for a further month.

Talks between the union and management concluded that the staff would be made redundant at the end of September unless the company acknowledged that there is a need for them across the two titles.

Following further talks the period has been extended by a month until the end of October.

National Union of Journalists’ Scottish organiser Paul Holleran said the union was due to hold a meeting with management on Friday to discuss the roles at risk which include three sub editors, two reporters and two page designers.

One further member of staff is thought to have remained in his job.

Said Paul: “The company initially said they were going at the end of September but have shifted on that and the period has been moved to two months.

“Hopefully we will know more after the meeting.”

The union has previously claimed that the two titles now don’t have enough writers and one of the subs is a former reporter and should therefore be kept on.

When Trinity Mirror announced the restructure in June the number of job losses was expected to be 93.

The union fought to bring the number down to 85 jobs that would be lost at the two flagship titles.

The job losses were a result of changes that have seen design and subbing of some magazine based features outsourced to the Press Association, while non-Scottish news and features would be shared with London-based national sister titles.

Trinity Mirror did not wish to comment.

49 plus 11 comes to 60 – not 85. None of the figures adds up.

“None of the figures adds up”

    Does that sentence add up?

I think it’s correct to say: “None of the figures adds up.”
None is a condensed form of “Not one”.

It is correct to say: “None (not one) of us is culpable,” therefore is is also correct to to say: “None (not one) of the figures adds up.”

Probably best to say: “The figures don’t add up.” Either way, they’re still wrong.
