Cash-strapped councils scrap free magazines

Two neighbouring councils have announced plans to scrap their magazines to save a total of £100,000.

Worthing Borough Council is axing its Vibe magazine which has been published three times a year since 2007, while Adur District Council will no longer produce Adur Outlook.

The 13th and final edition of Vibe will be published next month because the council says it can no longer afford it, after its government grant was reduced by £1.13m for 2011-2013.

Councils have been under pressure to reduce spending on their own publications by Communities Secretary Eric Pickles, who announced plans to crack down on them last year – to prevent them damaging local newspapers.

Vibe had a circulation of around 53,000, including an audio version sent to more than 250 residents, and each edition cost every household in the town just over 16p.

Worthing Borough Council leader Paul Yallop said: “We cannot afford it. Adur Outlook will also be axed.

“We may investigate an electronic magazine at a later date.”

The demise of the two magazines will save both councils a combined total of around £100,000 a year.

The move comes after regional publisher Johnston Press confirmed this week that two of its free titles in the area, the Eastbourne Advertiser and Worthing Guardian, had ceased publication.

Their closure followed that of the Newsquest-owned Worthing Sentinel last October.
