Bumper entry for new Regional Press Awards

The new regional press awards organised by the Society of Editors have been given a huge thumbs-up by the industry with the final entry tally topping 750.

Entries were being registered on the awards website at the rate of one a minute during the final 36 hours before Tuesday’s deadline.

The awards, held in association with the Newspaper Society and HoldtheFrontPage, are designed to celebrate the best of British regional newspaper journalism during 2010.

Judging will begin next week with shortlists due to be published early next month. Newspaper consultant and designer Peter Sands is chairing the panel of judges which includes HTFP publisher Paul Linford and blogger Steve Dyson.

SoE executive director Bob Satchwell said: “We are delighted by the huge response that doubled in the last 36 hours.

“The new on-line entry system organised by our website team at Magstar held up magnificently as the expected last minute rush developed – journalists will be journalists!”

Newspaper Society members undertook to participate in and support the awards and to avoid taking part in any competing UK-wide events.

A lunchtime awards ceremony will be held in London on 11 May, to coincide with the Newspaper Society AGM and Local Newspaper Week 2011.

I also couldn’t find any categories dedicated to online only publishers / publications. Yes, the awards are newspaper orientated but surely there needs to be some evolution to recognise the contribution online news publishers are providing.
