Brain tumour claims paper’s golf writer at 59

Douglas LoweA golf correspondent at a Scottish daily has died at the age of 59, just months after being diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Douglas Lowe, left, worked at Glasgow-based daily The Herald for 34 years after starting there as a reporter and sub-editor in 1977.

He joined The Herald’s sports desk in 1998 as a sub-editor before being appointed golf correspondent in 2003.

Douglas was diagnosed with a brain tumour at the end of December and the father-of-three died on Sunday.

Herald sports editor Donald Cowey, who appointed him to his golf correspondent role, said: “He knew really everything there was to know about the rules and etiquette of golf as well as being a capable player.

“He just loved the sport and was delighted to be covering it at all levels.

“He was an absolute top-notch journalist. He knew the ropes absolutely and wouldn’t miss a deadline.

“He was quiet, laid-back, unflappable but at the same time he was tenacious and wouldn’t be easily fobbed off and got some top stories because of it.

“He will genuinely be missed by all colleagues.”

Before joining The Herald, Douglas started out in journalism at the Liverpool Daily Post and Echo following his graduation from St Andrews University.
