Would-be journalists to help cover Ryder Cup

Two aspiring journalists are getting the chance to work alongside the elite corps of world golfing correspondents at the Ryder Cup in October.

Cardiff University students Benjamin Price and Johanna Scammell will write golf reports for the tournament’s website and be on hand at assist a bevy of more than 1,000 international journalists at the event in Newport.

They were chosen from more than 30 applicants for two voluntary internships to work in the tournament’s media centre at the Celtic Manor resort.

Applicants had to write a 1,000-word article on a current golfing issue, live or study in Wales, play golf and demonstrate media experience.

Benjamin, 21, pictured top left, has a golf handicap of 12 and writes for Cardiff University’s student newspaper, Gair Rhydd, while studying history.

He said: “When I heard about the internship I thought it was too good to be true because I get to combine my career aspirations with my hobby.”

He hopes to break into broadcast journalism after graduating next summer.

Johanna, also 21, studies journalism, film and media, plays golf as a hobby and has gained work experience at the South Wales Argus and local television and radio stations.

She said: “It’s a big local event and I’m going to be able to get some great work experience in journalism, so it’s a fantastic opportunity.”
