Weekly launches search for Apprentice’s apprentice

A weekly newspaper is marking the new series of The Apprentice by teaming up with a former contestant from the show in a celebrity role reversal.

The Wakefield Express has launched a campaign to find an apprentice for Claire Young, who was runner up in Alan Sugar’s TV contest two years ago.

Claire, who has since started several businesses, is now looking for her own apprentice and has joined forces with her local newspaper in her quest for an employee.

The winner of the search for ‘The Apprentice’s Apprentice’ will be offered a permanent job working for her new business School Speakers.

  • Claire said: “I first started looking for someone to help me out a couple of months ago and was genuinely shocked at the level of applicants in today’s market.

“Times are tough and, with the unemployment levels in Wakefield, people should be leaping at the chance for any job. But from messy mis-spelled CVs, people not turning up for interviews and badly written covering letters, I have found the whole experience so frustrating.

“So by launching this competition, we’re hoping to help anyone out there, whether it be a school leaver, university gradate, mum who wants to return to work, anyone at all who has the skills they need to get themselves on the first rung of the career ladder.”

A group of finalists will be interviewed Sugar-style by Claire, with clips posted on the newspaper’s website along with tips for finding a job.

Editor Mark Bradley said: “In the current economic downturn, finding a job isn’t an easy task so we’re delighted to be teaming up alongside Claire with this initiative.

“Hopefully we’ll be able to source one person a top-class apprenticeship with a well-known entrepreneur, and perhaps the other finalists will find some publicity secures them an alternative offer.”

The new series of The Apprentice starts tomorrow at 9pm on BBC1.
