Weekly helps organise Amy's homecoming parade

A welcome home for a winter Olympic heroine was organised by a weekly newspaper.

The Bath Chronicle teamed up with the BBC to organise the homecoming parade for Amy Williams who took gold in the women’s bob skeleton event at the Vancouver Games.

Thousands of people packed the city’s streets to watch the 27-year-old champion, who grew up, lives and trains in Bath, show off her gold medal.

The procession, which went from her former school to the city’s Guildhall for a civic reception, was pulled together amid a frenzy of meetings between the paper and local agencies.

Chronicle deputy editor Paul Wiltshire said: “There were times when we had a few wobbles about whether we were doing the right thing.

“But all those doubts disappeared when we saw the bus carrying Amy carve its way through streets packed with people wanting to share in her amazing success.

“It was a truly uplifting spectacle and we were proud to be at the heart of it.”

This week’s Chronicle carried pages of pictures of the homecoming which followed on from last week’s eight-page special about Amy’s triumph.

At last, something positive from the former daily paper.
Hopefully they can improve the content and reverse the terrible recent circulation figures. Unfortunately ‘Amy’ stories do not come along every week.
