Weekly bids to give memorable festive party

A weekly newspaper is helping to ensure elderly people in its patch area have a Christmas party to remember with its festive appeal.

The Dover Express is supporting an Age UK drop-in centre in the town for its annual charity appeal and aims to make its Christmas Eve party a success.

It is calling on readers and local businesses to contribute to the event and has so far secured the services of Santa and his elves for the night, along with an offer of a clown to entertain older people who attend.

News editor Kathy Bailes and reporters Rhys Griffiths and Yamurai Zendera have been busy pulling in favours from their contacts and generous donations have been given from business such as P&O Ferries and local community groups.

Kathy said: “We have been overwhelmed by the response to this year’s appeal.

“We thought it would be difficult to top last year’s campaign in support of our local children’s ward, but thanks to the generosity of our loyal readers it looks like we might just do it.”

One kind-hearted reader has donated £300 for the festive bash, while others have given raffle prizes and small gifts.
