Two weeklies and five dailies will battle it out for the coveted newspaper of the year title in the Regional Press Awards, the National Union of Journalists has announced.
The union has taken over the running of the awards for the first time, which are designed to celebrate the best of regional journalism.
The NUJ revealed the shortlist for the rest of the categories earlier this week and has now said which newspapers will compete for the top honour.
Those on the shortlist for newspaper of the year are:
- Cumberland News
- Hampstead & Highgate Express
- Irish News
- The News, Portsmouth
- Nottingham Post
- The Press, York
- Yorkshire Evening Post
The newspapers all had journalists nominated for individual categories in the awards, which will be held on 29 June.
NUJ general secretary Jeremy Dear said: “This was a particularly hard category for our judges to shortlist. The quality of journalism throughout our local and regional titles is outstanding.”

So not one free title among the contenders. Ho hum. Maybe this category is a tad weighted towards the paid fors!
