Shortlist for NUJ Regional Press Awards announced

Regional newspapers across the country will be hoping to scoop awards later this month after the National Union of Journalists announced its shortlist for the Regional Press Awards 2010.

Heading the list are the Northern Echo and the Portsmouth News, which have both been nominated for four awards, including sports journalist of the year (daily/Sunday).

The Cumberland News, Eastern Daily Press, Irish News and the Yorkshire Evening Post follow close on their heels, each gaining three shortlist nominations.

The awards were previously held by the Press Gazette but the NUJ has taken over the running of them for the first time, with the ceremony set to be held on 29th June.

NUJ general secretary Jeremy Dear said: “We decided to run the awards this year in order to provide a showcase for the outstanding work produced by journalists all over the country, but we were blown away by the outstanding quality of the entries, across all categories.

“In fact, one of the tragedies of the judging process is that there were several outstanding entries that failed to make the shortlist in their respective categories, as the standard of entries was so high.”

The reporters fighting it out for reporter of the year (daily/Sunday) are Gavin Aitchinson, The Press, York; Bimpe Archer, Irish News; Ciaran Barnes, Sunday Life; Phil Coleman, The News and Star and Allison Morris, Irish News.

And those shortlisted for the weekly reporter of the year title are Katie Davis, Ham & High Express; Eleanor Harding, Wandsworth Guardian; Kate Mason, Doncaster Free Press; Phil Turner, Rotherham Post and Cherry Wilson, Croydon Advertiser & Rotherham Advertiser.

Well done to all those shortlisted. It will be interesting to see how much coverage these awards are given by their respective journals, should they win.

Well done to all those shortlisted. Just to point out that Katie Baldwin and Mark Bickerdike are with the Yorkshire Evening Post meaning this paper actually has the same number of nominations as the Northern Echo and Portsmouth News.

No particular axe to grind, but I can’t help wondering why the subheads to this story says the Northern Echo heads list, without mentioning the Portsmouth News which has an equal number?

Doncaster Free Press also have three nominations for these award. Two photographers and one reporter. Unfortunately due to an error (one of many), on the part of the NUJ, my colleague was firstly shortlisted in the wrong category, and then noted to work for a totally non-existent newspaper. Anyhow, big shout out for all the talent at the Free Press!!

Credit to the NUJ for trying to do something positive, but it’s not half annoyed me over the last year to hear them saying that the quality of newspapers has suffered with fewer staff. That always feels as though they are kicking their members who work very hard to make sure the quality doesn’t suffer. Now the NUJ says the quality of entries was superb – so which is it? Has quality suffered or not?
