Regional press man who moved to Sun dies aged 76

A former Sun reporter who started out on regional titles in the 1950s has died aged 76.

Jim Lewthwaite began his career on the Workington Star in the mid-1950s before moving to the Hull Daily Mail in 1958.

After a brief spell with the Yorkshire Post he joined the Daily Mail, following in the footsteps of his father Jimmy who was night news editor of the Mail in Manchester.

His brother Gilbert also worked for the Mail before moving to America to join the Baltimore Sun

After joining the Mail Jim covered the North-East from the paper’s Newcastle office before moving to the its head office in Fleet Street.

He became deputy news editor but left the Mail to join The Sun, becoming the paper’s first chief reporter in 1973.

As chief reporter he enjoyed a roving commision, covering major stories throughout the world, and ended his career as Old Bailey correspondent before retiring in 1993.

Jim, who lived in Clacton on Sea, leaves a widow Pam, two children and two grand children.

    I was at the Press Association in the 1970s when Jim was on The Sun and he was good fun to have a pint with
