Regional daily editor injured in fatal car crash

A leading regional daily editor has been left with serious injuries after being involved in a car crash in which another man died.

Peter Charlton, editor of the Yorkshire Post, received serious chest injuries after being involved in the four-car collision on Wednesday morning.

The accident took place in the north of Sheffield at around 7.10am when Peter’s Lexus RX was in a head-on collision with an Audi A3.

Audi driver Michael John Selwood, 47, from Barnsley, was taken unconscious to hospital but was later pronounced dead.

It is thought Mr Selwood’s car was forced into oncoming traffic by a collision with a Vauxhall Astra travelling in the same direction.

The driver of the Astra, a 45-year-old woman, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Peter, who lives in Sheffield, remains in hospital after suffering several broken ribs and a fractured sternum but is expected to be released in the next few days.

A member of the board of the Society of Editors, he has been editor at the YP for the past six years and previously spent 12 years as editor of its sister title, the Sheffield Star.
