Refugee media awards open for entries

A set of annual media awards for journalists writing about refugee and asylum issues is calling for entries.

The sixth Refugee Week Scotland Media Awards 2010 are organised by Oxfam Scotland and open to staff and freelance journalists working in print, broadcast, online and photography.

Submissions, which must have a strong Scottish connection, will be judged on their originality and impact and must have been published/broadcast between 1 May 2009 and 30 April 2010.

Prizes will be awarded across five categories – print local, print national, broadcast media, online/multimedia and photography – and members of the public can also nominate journalists.

Last year Sheila Hamilton, from Glasgow daily the Evening Times, took the local print award while Sufyan Rashid from the Glasgow News was runner-up.

The judging panel will include people seeking asylum, exiled journalists and other media professionals and winners will be announced at the Tron Theatre, in Glasgow, on 18 June as part of Refugee Week Scotland.

The deadline for entries is 5pm on 7 May – for full details visit oxfam.org.uk.
