Queen praises regional daily’s youth paper

A monthly newspaper by young people which is published by a regional daily has won praise from the Queen.

The Leicester Mercury launched The Wave earlier this year, which is written and edited by young people.

And it gained a royal seal of approval after one of its young reporters, 11-year-old Will Sturgess, decided to send a copy to the Queen.

The Wave is printed inside the Mercury each month and is written entirely by youngsters from Leicestershire, with some guidance from editorial staff at the daily title.

Will, whose 16-year-old sister Hollie is assistant editor of The Wave, received a reply from the Queen’s lady-in-waiting thanking him for sending her the newspaper.

It read: “Her Majesty was pleased to read this special newspaper, and interested to learn it is the first in the world to be written, edited and sourced by young people between the ages of seven and 25 years.

“The Queen thought it most kind of you to send this copy of The Wave and sends her thanks and good wishes to you all.”

Will said he was ‘on top of the world’ to receive a reply from Buckingham Palace and now intends to send a copy of young people’s newspaper to Prime Minister David Cameron.
