Journalist’s second book in print months after first

A former regional press journalist has had his second book published, just months after his first one came out in print.

Mark Rowe’s new book, pictured left, tells the story of the 1945 unofficial Ashes series between England and an Australian Services team and is called ‘The Victory Tests’.

He started his journalism career at the Wilshire Times and stayed with a former fellow trainee from the title, William Verity, in Australia last year where he carried out research in newspaper archives.

Mark’s first book about how Britain prepared for a possible German invasion during the Second World War was published in the summer.

He said: “The Australians played all over the country in the war years, and in 1945 from Portsmouth to Gloucester to Blackpool, Selkirk and Greenock.

“Crowds and press interest were huge wherever they went. The days of international teams touring the counties are sadly long gone, presumably forever.”

Mark has worked on a number of regional papers including Carlisle’s News & Star and The News, Portsmouth, before going to work at Professional Security Magazine in 1999, where he remains.

His interest in the Victory Tests dates from a one-year working holiday in Australia in 1998.

The hardback book, priced at £17.99 is published by Sports Books of Cheltenham and for further information visit sportsbooks.ltd.uk.

Well done, Mark! Fine chap, worked briefly with him at the Gazette & Herald in Ryedale before his travels. Best of luck with the book.
