Journalist's first book tells of author's love life

A journalist at a regional daily newspaper has had a book published about the love life of a legendary author.

Sarah Freeman, who is features editor at the Yorkshire Post, has written the book about Charlotte Bronte, after researching her for the newspaper.

The hardback book, called Bronte in Love, will be released on 1 September and tells the story of Bronte’s complicated love life, which saw her reject two marriage proposals by the age of 23.

It is the first book written by Sarah, who previously worked as a features editor at the Northampton Chronicle and Echo, and she has also recently completed a children’s history book.

She said: “The book came about by chance when I was researching a story for the paper and came across details of Bronte’s torrid love life.

“I had studied her at A-Level and at university and I thought if I wasn’t aware of this then plenty of other people wouldn’t be either.

“She led a fascinating life and wrote letters almost every day of her life so there was plenty of material to go from. Her husband thought he had destroyed all the letters but there are so many that he missed.

“That sort of thing wouldn’t be possible in the modern day – the art and romance of letter writing has been replaced by the convenience of email.

“It took me about six months to write and I’m really pleased with it. It’s great to have the chance to research and write something on your own from start to finish.”

The book is priced at £14.99 and has been published by Great Northern Books. It can be ordered by visiting greatnorthernbooks.co.uk.
