Journalist and keen thespian dies after long illness

A popular former local press reporter and dedicated thespian has died aged 67.

Patrick Carnwath’s career saw him work for several local newspapers across England and the Daily Telegraph as a sub-editor.

Having studied at Eton, he read history at Cambridge University but turned to journalism after finding his studies unsatisfying.

A couple of years on the North Shields Gazette were followed by a stint with the East Anglian Daily Times in its Lowestoft office before joining the sub-editors’ desk with the Daily Telegraph where he worked for a number of years.

Seeking a new challenge, he left the Telegraph in 1971 and set off on a journey from the north to the south of Africa before returning to University College, London, to study theology.

He moved to Lincolnshire in 1975 with his young daughter and helped friends set up a textile business before returning to journalism with the Lincolnshire Echo, Louth Standard and the Louth Target, from which he retired three years ago.

Patrick enjoyed performing arts and he became a member of the Louth Playgoers after writing reviews of the shows.

Mark Price, MD of Louth Target publisher Grimsby and Scunthorpe Media, said: “Patrick was somebody I have known for many, many years and someone I have the greatest respect for.

“He was a very talented journalist, with an eye for the least obvious link and quirk within a story.

“Every newspaper he has worked for has been richer in content for his efforts.

“He was something of an inspiration to me as a young lad and I know he has followed my own media career with interest over the years – I am greatly saddened by his death, he will be missed by all who knew him.”

A spokesman for the Playgoers added: “Patrick always joined in the great fellowship we all enjoy during rehearsals, always having time for a chat and he was interested in us and our families. He was a very understanding and kind man.”

Patrick died at the end of last month at Louth County Hospital following a long illness.

His funeral takes place tomorrow at 1pm at Alford Crematorium and anyone who knew him is invited to the Half Moon Hotel, in Alford near Louth, following the service.
