Journalism students sell ads in magazine link-up

Journalism students from a college will take on responsibility for compiling part of a local magazine under a new project, which will see them selling adverts.

The students from City College Brighton and Hove who are attending the NCTJ Multi-media course will put together a four-page section of The Latest 7, a weekly listings magazine for the area.

They will take full responsibility for the section, called The Latest Word, to be published in the 18 January edition, including writing, designing, editing and selling advertising space to local businesses.

The magazine is read by more than 100,000 people each week and previous contributors have included Jo Brand, Julie Birchill and Chris Eubank.

Journalism lecturer Laura Raymond said: “The collaboration between The Latest 7 magazine and City College journalism students is proving to be a great success.

“The students have taken to the project with lots of enthusiasm and are taking responsibility for producing every element of The Latest Word section, from editorial to ad sales.”

An event to launch the issue will also be organised by the students.

Fiona McTernan, production director at the magazine, said: “We are very pleased to give the students from the NCTJ Multi-media course the opportunity to plan, write, edit, design and promote this section, which gives invaluable ‘on-the-job’ training of the whole process of magazine production.”

I guess it’s only a matter of time before journalists have to sell ads as well as write copy. Good to see that the body responsible for training journalists has taken the initiative…
