Island daily's long-serving columnist dies aged 87

A former politician and lay preacher who was also a newspaper columnist for more than 40 years has died aged 87.

Betty Brooke penned two columns for the Jersey Evening Post over the course of her long career.

Her long connection with the paper began in 1967 when she began writing a polititical sketch column under the pseudonym Hardbencher.

The column, entitled Eye on the States, provided an incisive look at the island’s ‘parliament’ – but came to an end in 1987 when she herself was elected as a senator.

Betty also wrote a column entitled Saturday Special under her real name which continued until recently.

She will be remembered by many readers as BB because of the way in which she signed-off each column.

Betty, who served for many years as a Methodist lay preacher on the island, was born in Aberdeen and served in the Wrens during the second world war.

It was through the Royal Navy that she met her husband, the Rev Herbert Brooke, who later became a minister at a Jersey Methodist church.
