Herald's digital chief to lead hyperlocal network

An online editor who oversaw the launch of a new-look website at a regional newspaper group has been appointed to lead a hyperlocal news network.

David Milne, who was group digital editor at Newsquest’s Glasgow-based Herald and Times Group, has been chosen as the new executive editor of STV Local.

The Scottish broadcaster will launch STV Local – a network of community-based hyperlocal sites to cover the whole of the country – in a pilot area later this summer.

David led the creation of a joint website for The Herald and the Sunday Herald as part of a £1m internet makeover for Newsquest’s titles in Glasgow.

With his new role, he will be responsible for rolling out the STV Local network across Scotland and will help to develop contacts with partner organisations, communities and local contributors.

David said: “I am delighted to be joining the team at STV. STV Local will transform the way communities engage with news and information by delivering content that is truly relevant.

“I was impressed with STV’s investment in the future and commitment to innovation and am excited to have a role in the future growth of the company.”

David was previously deputy editor of the Sunday Herald, having also spent time as assistant and news editor of the paper.

Alistair Brown, head of digital at STV, said he was delighted David was joining the company.

He said: “David brings with him a wealth of experience and skills and I very much look forward to working with him.”
