Former local press journalist found dead at 40

A former local press journalist has been found dead at his home at the age of 40.

Terry Morgan, who worked for the Bury Times for 20 years, was found at his home in St Thomas Court, Bury, on Thursday.

There are no suspicious circumstances and the coroner has been informed.

Terry, pictured left, had been working as a call-handler for Greater Manchester Police since leaving the paper in 2008.

Born and raised in Ramsbottom, Lancashire, he cut his teeth in journalism by initially working for a Bury-based news agency.

He joined the Times in 1988 and became the paper’s Ramsbottom reporter before becoming responsible for fire, police and ambulance coverage.

Bury Times news editor Steve Orrell said: “We’re all deeply stunned by the news. He was a larger than life character who was the face of the Bury Times to many people in the town.

“He knew the area inside out, covered many of Bury’s major stories over the years and many of the contacts he built up on a professional basis went on to become good friends as well.

“Not only did he report on events in the community, he got actively involved, whether it be military parades, sports festivals, or mountain rescue walks. Terry will be sorely missed by many people.”

Outside of work, Terry was assistant leader of Bury’s Bolton Road Methodists scout troop was also a volunteer with Rossendale Search and Rescue.

Terry was one of life’s good guys. Great news sense and, as Steve Orrell says, the face of Bury, to many people. What a sad loss.
