Former editor's book marks town's changing times

A former weekly editor who became an historian has published his third book about a Derbyshire town’s past.

Adrian Farmer was editor of the Belper News until he became co-ordinator of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.

His latest book entitled Belper Through Time tells the story of how the town has changed in the last 130 years.

Photographs of the town taken over more than a century are compared with pictures of the same scenes today in the book, published by Amberley Publishing.

It follows on from Adrian’s two previous local history books including The Spirit of Belper, which was published around 18 months ago.

Said Adrian: “Since Belper was inscribed on to the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Derwent Valley Mills Site in 2001, the drive to save, enhance and restore the historic town has never been greater.”

“By comparing views from years past, this book helps to define what has survived, what has been lost, and what we can do to ensure Belper remains the unique historic community it is today.”
