Former editor quizzes council chief over child death

Former Bimingham Mail editor Steve Dyson is carrying out a series of ‘big interviews’ for BBC local radio in his latest move into broadcasting.

Earlier this month we reported that Steve was to stand-in for veteran BBC WM daytime presenter Ed Dooley while he undergoes an operation.

Now he is fronting a six-week series of interviews for the station of people in the news in the West Midlands region.

The first interview, broadcast on Friday, saw Steve tackle Birmingham City Council’s director of childrens’ services Colin Tucker about the measures introduced to improve the department’s performance following the death of Khyra Ishaq.

Other interviewees over the coming weeks will include Birmingham Ladywood MP Claire Short and Archbishop of Westminster and former Archbishop of Birmingham the Most Rev Vincent Nichols.

Birmingham-born Steve will also be speaking to Marcia Shakespeare and Beverley Thomas – both mothers of teenage girls shot dead in the city’s Aston district.

Said Steve: “Having left newspapers I wanted to stay in journalism and hard news is my passion so I was honoured when the chance to work with BBC WM came up.

“I have recorded a really strong range of exclusive stories which I’m sure listeners will appreciate, that get to the heart of issues and get answers to some very important questions.”
