Former copy-taster at regional daily dies aged 76

Tributes have been paid to a former regional press sub-editor who has died in hospital at the age of 76.

David Browning worked at the Middlesbrough-based Evening Gazette from 1974, holding the roles of sub-editor and copy-taster, until his retirement in 2000.

He previously worked on the subs table at Glasgow’s Evening Citizen but was recruited to Teeside by the then Evening Gazette editor Ian Nimmo, where he rose to become copy-taster.

David lived in Saltburn, near Middlesbrough, but returned to his native Scotland last year with his wife Catherine, living in Ayrshire until he died in hospital last month.

His daughter Catherine Stone told the Evening Gazette he had died suddenly in hospital after contracting a virus.

She said: “He was a very kind man. He had the time of day for everybody. He had a good sense of humour.”

Former Evening Gazette journalist Mike Morrissey also paid tribute to David, who regularly attended the newspaper’s annual outing for retired staff.

He said: “He was always a kind, pleasant and patient colleague. He was always glad to stop and have a chat when he lived in Saltburn.”

David’s funeral took place on 2 August and as well as his wife and daughter, he also leaves grandchildren Lauren and Sam.

I only worked with David for about 10 months in the early 1990s but he was a smashing bloke. It was real pleasure to know him.
