Ex Brum editors launch into blogosphere

Former Birmingham daily newspaper editors Steve Dyson and Marc Reeves are keeping themselves busy in the blogosphere after leaving their jobs last week.

As revealed last month, ex-Birmingham Mail boss Steve’s new blog ‘Dyson at Large’ is launching on HoldtheFrontPage this week and will be visible here from tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile his former Birmingham Post counterpart Marc now boasts no fewer than three online outlets.

As well as his personal blog, he has launched a hyperlocal site called The Harborne Mile, and a weekly commentary blog on media website The Drum.

Marc used his most recent post on The Drum to launch an outspoken attack on both the National Union of Journalists and “conservative” newspaper managements in a piece about what he will not miss about newspapers.

He wrote: “If there’s one group in the ‘regional press community’ that has done more than conservative management teams to hobble the industry, it’s the luddite, politically dominated, myopic, change-averse and frightened union (OK, I’ll say it – the NUJ).

“In their view, newspapers have but one purpose: to serve and employ journalists, and every role, structure, process and tradition is to be preserved at all costs.

“The certainty that the union would oppose any change has only helped confirm change-averse managers in their own conservatism. They’d choose to fight the simple battles over job cuts, and avoid the more fundamental challenges of cultural and technological change.”

The Harborne Mile blog aims to cover the area of Birmingham where Marc lives which he says lacks a “vibrant” online presence.

He said: “The aims are to create a space and then curate news, information and comment with the help of fellow Harbornites, and I hope the blog will feature contributions from as wide a range of voices as possible.”
