Editors' chief nets nearly £1,000 for charity

Society of Editors boss Bob Satchwell has raised nearly £1,000 to help those with prostate cancer after successfully completing a yacht race around the Isle of Wight.

The former Cambridge News editor and his three crew members have raised £945 for the Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust, based at the Cambridge hospital, after taking part in the Round the Island Race at the weekend.

The team completed the gruelling race in just over nine hours, with them ranked in 438th place out of more than 1,600 boats taking part.

And the funds raised for the hospital will go towards a ultrasound scanner for the urology clinic, which will cost £72,980.

Bob’s team decided to support the good cause because his wife Michelle has just retired as chairman of the Friends of Addenbrooke’s Hospital and his neighbour John Stewart is battling the disease.

Said Bob: “Thanks to John’s inspiration this was one of our better performances and close to our personal best.”

The event marked 40 years since Bob started out in journalism and he has taken part in the sailing race more than 20 times.

His crew was made up of his brother Chris and friends Pete Gibbs and Chris Bull.
