Deputy editor to swim Lake Windermere for hospice

The deputy editor at a regional daily is preparing to undergo a one-mile swim across Lake Windermere this weekend to raise funds for the paper’s adopted charity.

Paul Hartley, left, from the Hull Daily Mail, will brave the cold to take part in the Great North Swim tomorrow, along with around 9,000 other swimmers.

He hopes to raise £500 for Dove House Hospice’s Love You 2 Appeal, the paper’s charity of the year for its 125th anniversary.

The appeal aims to raise £2.5m in two-and-a-half years to fund new facilities at the hospice.

Paul said: “I started swimming to get in shape and keep fit. I saw the Great North Swim on television and thought it would provide a goal to keep me going.

“I thought I should raise money for charity. Dove House was the obvious choice as our charity of the year.

“Having been to the hospice, I was bowled over by the care provided. There is such warmth and humanity.

“I have been going swimming every Friday night and for the past month I have been training three times a week.”

a) No he won’t – at least not yet – it’s been postponed because of toxic algae. Often happens this time of year after a warm dry summer.
b) It’s Windermere, not Lake Windermere; that would be tautological. I knew when I saw the headline that he wouldn’t be a Lake District journalist!

Oh, dear, how grumpy I sound. Good luck to him when he does get in the water!
