Tackling the rise of the tasers

Deployment of tasers by police increased by 25pc in the first quarter of 2009 compared with the final three months of 2008.

New figures show they were actually discharged 62 times during the period – a rise of 56pc.

The weapons discharge a shock of 50,000v which is meant to disable someone without causing them serious or permanent injury.

But critics say not enough training is given to police officers in their use.

Speak to your local force to see what they’re doing to keep officers up to speed – they might even let you watch a training session up close.

Also, make use of the Freedom of Information Act to find out how much they are being used.
