  • He’s used to producing award-winning pictures – now a photographer with The Press, York, has seen his eye for an image immortalised by a legendary national newspaper cartoonist.

Anthony Chappel-Ross captured a striking shot of a rider being thrown from her mount at the recent Bramham Horse Trials.

A string of national titles also used the photo – and famed Daily Telegraph cartoonist Nicholas Garland was so impressed with it he used it as the basis for a cartoon on the Iranian election, with the fallen rider symbolising president Mahmoud Ahmedinejad.

He also took the time to send his original sketch and a personal message of thanks to 26-year-old Anthony, who has been with The Press for five years and has twice claimed the Newspaper Society’s young photographer of the year prize in that time.

“The ironic thing about this picture was that I came within a fraction of missing it,” said Anthony.

“I had put my camera down as this horse left a water jump, but when it came to the next obstacle I could see what was going to happen and managed to capture it in time.

“It’s nice that a cartoonist of such note would be interested in one of my pictures, and it’s even nicer that he has sent me the original cartoon inscribed with a message saying what a great picture he thought it was.

“I’ve never seen one of my pictures used in this way before and I’ll definitely be getting the cartoon framed.”

Steve Hughes, managing editor of The Press, said: “Photography is all about spotting the decisive moment and Anthony has an instinctive grasp of that.

“We’re delighted his picture has inspired a Fleet Street legend like Nicholas Garland – and we’re touched by his generous gesture to a member of our team.”
