Tribute evening to much-loved press reporter

The life and times of a popular West Midlands press journalist will be celebrated next month at a special tribute night.

Andy Donkersley died last November aged 52 having worked for the Express and Star for 20 years and the event is being billed as a reunion for current and former E&S staff.

Andy was born in Huddersfield and worked for the town’s Daily Examiner, Blackpool Gazette and Derby Evening Telegraph.

But it was in his adopted home of the West Midlands where he made his journalistic impact, seeing scores of reporters come and go during two decades with the Express and Star.

His obituary on HoldtheFrontPage was by some considerable distance the most-commented upon this website has ever carried.

Among those organising the event are Birmingham Mail business editor Jon Griffin, former E&S reporter Arthur Mills and former E&S sports editor Steve Gordos.

Arthur is also known as skilled DJ and they are planning suitable musical tributes to Andy.

  • The evening starts at 7.30pm on 1 August at the New Hampton pub, in Riches Street, Wolverhampton – one of Andy’s favourite haunts. For more information email [email protected].
