Torture investigation takes Paul Foot Award

Yorkshire Post journalist Rob Waugh missed out on the top prize at the Paul Foot Award for Campaign Journalism.

First prize and a cheque for £5,000 went to The Guardian’s Ian Cobain for his investigation into Britain’s involvement in the torture of terror suspects detained overseas.

Rob didn’t walk away from last night’s ceremony in London empty handed though as all shortlisted candidates took home a runners-up prize of £1,000 each.

He was shortlisted for three separate investigations he conducted into mismanagement at Leeds City Credit Union, a regime of cavalier spending at Leeds Metropolitan University and a takeover bid of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club.

Also shortlisted for the award were Jonathan Calvert and Clare Newell from The Sunday Times, Paul Lewis of The Guardian, Ben Leapman from the Daily and Sunday Telegraph and Stephen Wright and Richard Pendlebury from the Daily Mail.

Private Eye magazine and The Guardian newspaper set up the award in memory of Paul Foot, the journalist and left-wing campaigner who died in 2004.

Congratulations to all the winners and shortlisted journalists – but where the hell were the trade Press journalists who have been out-scooping the qualities and Sunday papers for years? If they are not entering the competition, the organisers need to urgently ask themselves why not!!!!
