'Secrets' newspaper archive goes online

Fans and followers of freedom of information issues can enjoy a new archive of a campaigning group’s newspaper.

Called ‘Secrets’, it was published between 1984 and 1993 by lobby group the Campaign for Freedom of Information which this year celebrates its 25th anniversary.

The newspapers are likely to be of interest to anyone studying the history of freedom of information in the UK, with early editions looking at the viewpoints’ of the politicians of the time such as Neil Kinnock, David Steel and then PM Margaret Thatcher.

Secrets documents the problems that prompted demands for what eventually became the Freedom of Information Act, the progress of various private members’ bills promoted by the CFOI, the campaigns of the time and awards given to public authorities which voluntarily opened their files to the public.

  • The newsletters are downloadable as PDFs from the CFOI website.
