'Power of the press' prevents more pothole protests

The power of the press is being hailed after a national newspaper picked up and ran with a Surrey Herald story on the perils of potholes.

Earlier this month the Trinity Mirror weekly reported the dismay of residents over a pothole in the town of Cobham despite continued requests to the council to fill it.

Upon seeing the story, the Daily Mail launched a bid to find the country’s worst potholes and sent a photographer to Cobham to see the problem up close.

Just a day after local campaigner Ken Purssey met the Mail photographer, engineers filled in the hole.

Mr Purssey told the Herald: “It’s thanks to the power of the press that we have got this work done at last.

“If it wasn’t for the Herald’s help the Daily Mail would never have known about this pothole.

“I only hope the council will sit up and take notice. I’ve heard there are worse roads in the rest of the country than in Elmbridge but if this is the case then I feel really sorry for the rest of the country.”

If the Daily Mail are still looking, I remember hearing that there are four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire.
