PA to shut Midlands regional office

The Press Association is closing one of its regional offices with a further two under review, it has announced.

The West Midlands centre, based in the Digbeth area of Birmingham, will shut when the lease expires on 1 July with reporters to work remotely and from home.

A PA spokeswoman said similar proposals were on the table for its offices in Manchester and Cardiff when their leases expire in 2010 and 2011 respectively.

She added the proposals were the result of a review of all of PA’s UK regional offices with no other plans at present to close any more.

PA editor Jonathan Grun said: “Our West Midlands reporters often go for days without visiting the Birmingham office.

“They are out and about finding stories and filing back to the newsdesk from just about anywhere.

“At a time when everyone is looking at costs, we want to make sure our editorial budget is being used in the best possible way.”

Maybe PA could roll out this programme and shut all their offices.

It seems to me to make sense. If people are retaining their jobs – and I am sure they are more than used to operating remotely – fair enough. The media world as we all know is a changin’.
