North West blog awards open for entries

Entries for the fourth annual Manchester Blog Awards are open.

Celebrating the best of the north-west city’s online writers, there are six prize categories: new, personal, arts and culture, city and neighbourhood, writing and blog of the year.

The awards are held as part of the Manchester Literature Festival. Closing date for nominations is 18 September and the awards ceremony takes place on 21 October in Manchester.

The Yorkshire Evening Post has launched another hyperlocal website to add to the 20 set up earlier this summer.

The latest site, harehillstoday.co.uk, covers the Harehills, Gipton, Osmondthorpe, and Burmantofts areas of Leeds.

Each of the community websites feature ultra-local news, including community directories with links to local groups and organisations and the latest planning applications.

Andrew Hutchinson, YEP digital community editor, said: “We want these sites to be a daily source of news, sport and entertainment for the very latest on what’s going on in the community.”


Professional Photographer magazine is accepting entries to its free annual Photographer of the Year Awards.

There are ten categories to enter including for editorial and best student photographer.

Journalism industry heavyweights are set to gather at Coventry University this autumn for the World Journalism Conference.

Among the guest speakers confirmed for the event are BBC Newsnight presenter Jeremy Paxman, former Scotsman editor and University of Kent journalism professor Tim Luckhurst, Lincoln University journalism professor Richard Keeble and MediaGuardian columnist Jeff Jarvis, who will speak via video link from New York.

The event, tagged ‘Is World Journalism in Crisis?’, will be chaired by Kevin Marsh, editor at the BBC College of Journalism.

It is free and open to all and takes place from 2pm to 5pm on 28 October.


The issue of how privacy affects the general public rather than celebrities will be explored at a media law conference in the autumn.

The Privacy, Defamation and the Media Conference will also examine recent rulings against the paparazzi, the spread of libel and family courts.

It is being held on 5 November in central London, will be chaired by Desmond Browne QC and speakers include Society of Editors executive director Bob Satchwell.
