New editor revealed at big city title

Birmingham Post business editor Alun Thorne has been named as the title’s new editor.

Alun will succeed Marc Reeves who is stepping down at the end of December following the Trinity Mirror paper’s switch from daily to weekly last month.

John Griffith, MD of Trinity Mirror’s Midlands division BPM Media, said: “Alun has played a key role in the multimedia development of the title since he returned to the business and done so with great energy, enthusiasm and skill.

“I look forward to him bringing those same qualities to the editor role, and I know he can count on the support and goodwill of everyone in the business.”

Alun will formally take over from Marc on 1 January and will report to David Brookes, new editor-in-chief of BPM Media.

  • In a separate development, National Union of Journalists’ members at BPM Media have called off the threat of a pre-Christmas strike. Chapel members last month voted in favour of strike action but negotiations between the NUJ and the company have made progress.

The ballot was called after Trinity Mirror revealed it was looking to shed around 40 jobs as a result of the Birmingham Post going weekly and Birmingham Mail moving to overnight priniting. The NUJ said it wanted to avoid any compulstory redundacies.
