Multimedia journalism under conference spotlight

The future of multimedia journalism skills and training will be the central theme at the second Journalism Skills Conference.

Run by the National Council for the Training of Journalists, this year’s event takes place on 3-4 December and will commence at the home of BBC Scotland before moving onto Hampden Park stadium.

It follows last year’s inaugural conference in Salford which was attended by regional press editors and journalism lecturers from across the country.

This year’s conference will begin with lunch at Pacific Quay, the HQ of BBC Scotland, and will be followed by a question-time debate and a tour of the £188m centre, which was opened in 2007.

Atholl Duncan, head of news and current affairs at BBC Scotland, said: “With the whole media industry going through a period of seismic change, there has never been a better time to consider the skills and training needed for our journalists of today and the future.

“The Journalism Skills Conference is taking place at a crucial time for all.

“BBC Scotland is delighted to be hosting the NCTJ and to help create space to debate how we ensure the future of quality, informed and accurate journalism in the UK.”

Following the tour delegates will stay on at Pacific Quay for the conference reception, dinner and presentation of awards to the top performing and most improved NCTJ accredited courses.

The Chairman’s Award for services to journalism training will also be presented.

Day two will see the conference move to Hampden Park, Scotland’s national stadium and the athletics venue for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Delegates will be invited to contribute to interactive sessions focusing on media trends, the gold standard for training and the future structure and content of qualifications for multimedia journalists.

The conference is open to everyone involved in journalism recruitment, education and training and the discussions at the conference will play a large role in determining the future shape of NCTJ qualifications.
