Journalism training chief quits post after six weeks

The head of accreditation with the National Council for the Training of Journalists has left the post less than two months into his tenure.

Tony Loynes, ex-deputy editor of the East Anglian Daily Times, has resigned due to the commute from his home in Suffolk to the NCTJ’s offices in Saffron Walden, Essex.

A spokesman for the NCTJ said: “Tony Loynes was unable to continue as the NCTJ’s head of accreditation due to the difficult commute to our offices in Newport, Saffron Walden.

“We wish him well in his future career.”

Tony took on the role in September, prior to which he was editorial director of Wilmington Business Information which until recently owned Press Gazette.

I live in the north and had a sniff about this job when it was first advertised. I was told in no uncertain terms that the post would be ‘based’ at NCTJ HQ. This seemed unnecessary as there was a huge amount of UK travel as part of the role. There was no flexibility re. working electronically/home working/videoconferencing. Employers need to understand that the days of working from a base…particularly when the role is a roving one… are over. And when it comes to recruting, all you’ll get are people who live within 10 miles of Saffron Walden.
