Journal launches new free weekly edition

North-East regional daily The Journal has launched a new free weekly edition specifically designed to serve readers in Northumberland.

The Journal Extra will be published each Thursday and will be free with Northumberland copies of the main paper.

It will also be distributed to over 300 outlets across the county including dentists, surgeries, hotels, tourist information centres and churches.

The initiative will provide Northumberland readers with a more local diet of news and sport alongside the main paper’s more region-wide agenda.

Editor Brian Aitken said: “We are Northumberland’s local paper and our new free weekly will mean that we can offer an even better service to our readers.”

The paper is also offering people in the county the chance to get involved and become community correspondents for where they live.

The Journal retains a strong reporting presence in Northumberland with district offices in the towns of Hexham and Bedlington.

They were among those kept open when the closure of five other district offices across Trinity Mirror’s North-East titles was announced last year.
