International photography prize open for entries

Entries are open for the British Journal of Photography’s fifth International Photography Award.

The total prize fund sits at £13,000 with two categories on offer – body of work and best single image.

Winners’ work will also be exhibited at a leading photography gallery in London and feature in the BJP.

The Manchester Evening News has launched a new online debating forum.

It is kicking off with a discussion over the PR battle between Manchester’s two big football clubs – City and United – since last season ended in May.

The two clubs have been involved in some high-profile transfer activity which included a controversial poster from Manchester City.

A launch message explains that more topics and sections with be added to Have Your Say in due course.


The Liverpool Echo has launched an in print and online 16-page supplement featuring its readers’ photos.

All the snaps are from the Echo’s group on photo sharing website Flickr, under the banner ‘Secret Liverpool’.

The group now has over 200 members – click through to see the online version of the supplement which features city shots and scenic scenes.


Photographer Jake Oakley raised more than £1,100 for Breakthrough Breast Cancer by doing a tandem skydive in Lincolnshire.

Jake, who works for Johnston Press’ Reporter Series in West Yorkshire, took to the skies on his 23rd birthday and leapt from 15,000ft.

He is raising money in memory of his mother who died from breast cancer when Jake was five. To sponsor him visit his JustGiving.com page.


Sports writer Brian Madley has died aged 73.

He began his career as a copy boy with the South Wales Echo and went on to spend 37 years with the nationals, including a spell as chief football writer with The People.

Brian was crowned sports journalist of the year in 2000 by the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame.

He died in hospital in his home town Chelmsford. His funeral starts at 10.15am at Writtle Road Crematorium, Chelmsford, on Wednesday.
