Friday Funnies: A dual-purpose headline

By now your sides should have recovered after splitting from last week’s comedy overload. So here is part two of July’s bumper funnies from the press and media.

Regular readers of HoldtheFrontPage may recognise this Birmingham Mail front page from a recent story. Departing Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry had chosen the esteemed pages of the Trinity Mirror daily to bid a fond farewell to loyal Villa fans.

It just struck us that the headline on the unrelated front page lead could have been serving a dual purpose:


Good to see some symbiosis between editorial and advertising in this Rutland and Stamford Mercury story. Well, selling your product IS all about targeting the right audience:


And in a similar, but slightly more depressing vein, something from the Scunthorpe Telegraph:


The Liverpool Echo carried a report about a local police officer leaving his cop car in the middle of a pavement outside a city centre supermarket…..

…..which outraged one Echo reader so much they momentarily lost their grip on the English language:


Finally, this one from the National Union of Journalists just goes to show there’s no such thing as a ‘free lanch':
