Former Journalists' Charity chairman dies aged 73

The former chairman of the Journalists’ Charity Bob Warren has died.

Mr Warren, executive editor and a long-serving staffer with the News of the World, had been battling cancer and was aged 73.

His death yesterday comes just a few days after he finished a two-year stint as the charity’s chairman during which time he oversaw the opening of the £4m Pickering House care home, in Dorking, where the charity also has its HQ.

David Ilott, director of the Journalists’ Charity, said: “Bob was a Trustee of the charity for almost ten years, the last two as chairman.

“His term as chairman coincided with the completion and opening of the new care home.

“With this major development completed, he led the charity through the process of determining its aims and objectives for the next five years.

“His counsel and determination to help his fellow journalists will be missed.”

Bob spent around 45 years with the News of the World after joining the title in 1964.

After retiring in 2000, he rejoined the paper as an editorial consultant.

He is survived by his wife Madeline and two children. His funeral takes place at 1pm on 15 January at Golders Green Crematorium, in Hoop Lane, London.

Everyone is welcome at the funeral and there will be a buffet at the Hendon Hall Hotel, in Ashley Lane, Hendon, after the service.

Donations to Pancreatic Cancer UK are being collected by the funeral directors H Phillips, 530 Watford Way, London.
