Former Citizen journalist dies aged 90

A former West Country journalist who spent the majority of his career in Gloucestershire has died aged 90 after a long illness.

Thomas Hubert Tyler, left, known as Hubert or Huw to his friends, started his journalism career in the 1930s.

After a spell working in a bank, he joined his local newspaper in North Shropshire before being called up to the Army in 1939 in which he served for eight years.

Following World War Two he joined the Liverpool Daily Post and Echo and then moved to the Gloucestershire town of Stroud where he worked for the Bristol Evening Post and Western Daily Press.

He then became chief reporter for The Citizen and finally a sub-editor before his retirement in 1983.

His son Derek said he was proud of his days as a journalist. “He loved his job and used to come back to see people at The Citizen regularly,” he said.
